Reaching our estate from Monforte one can enjoy a stunning view: we are in the valley of the long-lasting and well-structured Barolo wines. Here, in the area of "Ginestra", we cultivate our vineyards, seven hectares (of the total ten of the property) divided between the varieties of Nebbiolo, Barbera and Dolcetto. The land, the favourable microclimate, the good position of the vineyards, a long-established tradition: these factors enable us to work aiming at a high quality production which we are able to maintain owing to the small size of the estate. The annual production is of 50.000 bottles.
"Ginestra" is a famous cru of Barolo which Lorenzo Fantini, at the end of the XIX century, recalls for the excellence of its wines in a wonderful monograph on viticulture and oenology in the province of Cuneo. The central vineyards face south while the rest face south-east; therefore they all benefit from an excellent position. The soil, from the Helvetian period, is characterized mainly by calcareous and clayey marls. The gradient of the land varies from 25 to 35% and the average altitude is of 350 metres. The varieties used are Barbera, Dolcetto and Nebbiolo, in the two subvarie-ties Lampia (prevalently) and Michet.
The Lampia biotype has a medium to large sized pyramidal bunch with a well developed wing, a medium to small berry with less intense colouring with respect to the Michet. The Michet biotype has a medium sized bunch of cylindrical- conic shape, quite compact and with a long stem. The berry is medium of a blue-black colour. Michet produces more concentrated and coloured wines, while Lampia brings out aromas and perfumes. The growing system for all the varieties is the Guyot in rows. The average production per hectare is 60/65 quintals. The vineyard work is carried out by all the family, with the valued assistance of the agronomist Dr. Giampiero Romana.
The wine-making area is equipped with a technologically advanced system which allows for the extraction of all the noble parts of the grapes while controlling every phase of the wine-making process. This means that the best results can be obtained with every grape variety in full respect of tradition. The ageing area is located in the original cellar, which has been in use since 1886 and whose original features have since been maintained intact; the barrels are of French oak and hold 35 hectolitres. This is the most important part of the estate. Here we store our wines, our Barolo, and the experience of four generations. Here are kept the memories of past efforts, worries, anxieties. Here is where our dreams come to life.
