Trentino Alto Adige

Description

Apples, for example. Or the green of the valleys, the candour of the snow-capped mountains, or perhaps the placid lakes. Trentino-High Adige/Südtirol is a region that irresistably evokes images of genuineness, naturalness and quiet. So whether your holiday will be spent on the banks of Lake Garda, in the Stelvio National Park, among the spectacular Dolomites Mountains, in one of the many verdant valleys, or skiing at Madonna di Campiglio or San Martino di Castrozza, you are sure to find exactly what you're looking for: splendid nature, excellent hospitality, excellent food and wine. For lovers of culture and history, this area has much in store: the provinces of Trento or Bolzen (both provinces with their own special autonomy) have their fair share of historic sites and monuments to admire. Trento's Romanesque/Gothic Cathedral dating from 1545 to 1563 hosted the most famous Council of Christianity. Also, the town of Rovereto vaunts two particular points of architectural interest, both dating back to the 15th century: the Castle and the Church of St. Mark. On the hill of Miravalle, the great Bell of those fallen in war provides the suitable occasion for a civil pilgrimage. In Bolzen, a city where Italian and German cultures seamlessly blend together, between the many architectural sites we recommend beginning from a "lesser" work, yet one which have a great symbolic interest: the Porta del Vino (the "Wine Gate") inside Bolzen's gothic Cathedral, artistically engraved with images of peasants at the work between the vines. A homage to wine, which here is produced with excellent results - just one more reason for this region's appeal. Not to be missed is the Domenican Church, with its 14th century fresco on the "Triumph of Death" in clear Giotto style. Finally, Merano is a pretty and highly popular tourist centre with ancient porticoes and a suggestive historic centre.
