Description

A charming resort in the province of Trento, Tenno enjoys a splendid view over Lake Garda, although set in a typical alpine landscape. Thanks to its proximity to the lake, it enjoys a Mediterranean climate. The Upper Garda area was inhabited since prehistoric times, starting with the Reti, who were, later, colonized by the Romans. In 1027 the castle, built to defend the area, was assigned to the Accounts of Appian, who, subsequently, ceded their rights to the Bishop of Trent. In 1703 the castle was destroyed by the Vendôme, who used its cannons to attack and bomb the neighboring castles. In 1807 it was auctioned by the Bavarian government and, in 1922, due to the severe damage suffered during the First World War, the entire complex was completely demolished.
Sites of Interest:
- the archaeological site of San Martino, one of the most important of Trentino, where there are traces of several settlements from the prehistoric period to the late antiquity and with the presence of a sanctuary or at least a sacred place;
- the Castle of Tenno, currently privately owned, built on Roman foundations, during its long history it was the transition zone for different populations (Lombards, Franks), various political factions (the Guelphs and Ghibellines), and several rulers (the Bishops of Trento, the Venetians and the Visconti). The tower was demolished on the orders of Civil Engineers in 1922, after suffering heavy damage during the bombardments of the First World War;
- the district (Borgo) of Frapporta, a medieval village made of stone houses, narrow streets, plazas and wide gates, enclosed by walls, with a XVII century watchtower. The houses are built on artificial terraces in the valley of Magnone and in the rock of Saint Lawrence, which overlooks the plain below and Lake Garda;
- the medieval town of Canale, documented since 1211, is a historical jewel, which has survived to this day, virtually unchanged. Here, worth of a visit are the Museum of agricultural tools and the House of Artists;
- Lake Tenno, in which it is possible to swim, is one of the most pristine stretches of water in Italy;
- the Church of San Lorenzo, a splendid example of Romanesque architecture, which contains the remains of frescoes from different eras, including a Judgement of the second half of the XIV century;
- Monte San Pietro, an uncontaminated oasis, which is reachable after a pleasant walk and on top of which there is a small church, from where it is possible to enjoy fantastic views over the valley of the Sarca and Lake Garda;
- the Church of St. John the Baptist.
