Description

Town in the province of Trento, Storo is the most important centre of the Giudicarie region, located just north of Lake Idro, where the Valley del Chiese tends to enlarge. It is a crucial crossing point between the Valley of Ledro and the basin of Lake Garda, between Lombardy and Val Rendena.
The discovery of relics from the Neolithic and Bronze Age attest that settlements were present in the area since ancient times. The Romans colonized the area in 118 B.C., but it was only after the clashes between the troops of Augustus and the local populations (Reti), that the inhabitants submitted to their rule. After the fall of the Empire, even the Valley del Chiese was subject to incursions and depredations by the Barbarians. The first documents that evidence the existence of the village date back to year 1000. Although the town's history is linked to the Accounts of Lodron, the community never suffered a feudal relationship, but always enjoyed a large degree of autonomy and self-government. For a long period, due to its location on the border, it was a passage for several armies that used the territories of the Valley del Chiese with the intent to encircle their enemies or, conversely, to escape from the same. The "defensive line of the Giudcarie", which was strengthened by the fortress of Lardaro, was completed by the Austrians in the last years of the XIX century, was destroyed during the First World War.
In terms of gastronomy, Storo is famous for its excellent flour, obtained by the grinding of corn grains, grown in the Valle del Chiese, ideal for the preparation of tasty polenta specialties.
