Description

On the origins of the town's name, several theories have been formulated: for some historians, Sardara would be the name of a queen, while for others it would refer to the temple or altar of Sardus Pater and finally, for another school of thought, it derives from the Phoenician "Sarad (red, as the color detail of the earth in the surrounding fields).

The presence of the Nuraghe Arigau, near to the main centre, attests the presence of a settlement since the Neolithic period. The area was under the control of the Phoenicians and Carthaginians who took advantage of the healthy properties of the thermal waters in the area and the extreme fertility of the nearby fields, often planted with grain.
