Description

The town's name derives from the Latin "Mons Floris" and honors the goddess Flora. Municipality in the hilly province of Ascoli Piceno, whose territory is crossed by the river Aso. Not far from the sea, from its vantage point, it is possible to admire a wide view of Monti Sibillini. Of medieval origins, its main centre still appears intact, with its gates, its fortified walls and towers built between the XV and XVI centuries. It also preserves its ancient culinary traditions, combined by popular wines produced in the area.
Remains found evidence that the area was already populated in prehistoric times, specifically since the Iron Age. Subsequently the area was colonized by the Romans. Between the III and V centuries it became seat of a Parish church, that had jurisdiction over a vast territory. Documents of the XII century attest the presence of two castles: one in Aspromonte and another one in Montefiore, between which the main town center emerged. In the XIV century the town was under the control of the city of Fermo and in the XV century under the direct rule of the Papal States, that ordered the reinforcement of the defensive walls. In the following period, until the XVIII century with the abolition of feudalism, several local noble Families succeeded to the government, appointed by the Church.
