Description

The name derives from "Lupatiolum" (land of wolves), probably due to its isolated rocky location, where once wolves would roam in search of food. A small town in the province of Asti, it is located on the border with the territory of Cuneo, characterized by narrow streets and surrounded by terraces on which orderly grow vineyards, from whose grapes is produced a wine famous and appreciated throughout the world.
It was a fief under the rule of the Aleramici, then it was ceded to Bonifacio del Vasto, to the Del Carretto and then to Guglielmo di Busca. In the XIII century there is an attested relationship between the Lords of Canelli and those of the city of Asti, regarding the domain over the "castrum" of Loazzolo and their interest in its particular location, from where it was possible to control the running through commercial routes. Asti granted the town in fief to various local lords and under the rule of Lord Bartolomeo Genarro, the territory experienced a period of great development and prosperity. In the first half of the XVI century the Emperor Charles V donated Loazzolo in fief to the Scarampi. In the early XVIII century, with the Savoy, the town became a Marquisate under the rule of the Cacherano Crivelli Scarampi, until it passed to the Cavoretto di Belvedere. The following years saw Loazzolo directly involved in the clashes and affairs of the times in Piedmont.

Not to miss:
- the Parish Church of Saint Anthony, located in the center of the town and probably built in the late XV century. Altered through the centuries, at present it features a different aspect to the original one. The building features one major nave, two side aisles and is flanked by a Bell tower of more ancient origins. In the right aisle is preserved an XVIII century wooden statue of the Madonna and Child and a series of paintings of the first half of the XIX century attributed to the artist Ramello. The XIX century organ was constructed by the local craftsman maestro Collino;
- the Church of Santa Libera, which features a single nave plan with a circular apse;
- the oval shaped Church of San Sebastian or Oratory of the Disciplined;
- the Church of San Poncio, built in ancient times;
- the ruins of the Castle of ancient origins, today is only visible part of the perimeter wall. Its presence was already attested in the XIII century and was demolished in the XV. It is situated on a hilltop overlooking the village.
