Description

The town's name derives from the Latin word "guru" (water vortex). Municipality in the province of Treviso, located near the river Livenza, the territory of Gorgo al Monticano is positioned on the border with the region of Friuli Venezia Giulia. The local economy is mainly related to agriculture and livestock, while industry and services sectors are in growth.
Based on archaeological findings, it is believed that the first settlement dates back to Roman times. The Empire colonized the area by building a very important road artery, the Via Postumia, which, at the time, shortened the distance and timing of trade and exchanges between the various towns and cities of Veneto. The Latin influence is also evident in the names of the localities. In 452 the entire area was invaded and looted by the Barbarians at the orders of Attila, while in the second half of the XIV century it became part of the Republic of Venice, whose richest families built their residences here. In the first half of the XV century, the lands were invaded by Hungarians and Germans, after which followed by a period of relative calm, interrupted only by short periods of Austrian and French domain.

Attractions:
- the Parish Church of Cavalier, dedicated to St. Daniel, probably built between the XIV and XV centuries, in Romanesque style. In the first half of the XX century it was enlarged and the two side chapels were added. Inside it preserves a XV century fresco depicting Saint Lucia, a series of 18 frescoes, recently discovered, kept hidden for centuries under a layer of lime, several other paintings and some precious statues;
- the Church dedicated to St. Hippolytus and Cassiano, probably built in the XVI century, is located in the main centre. The interior, entirely covered with frescoes, preserves an altarpiece by Sansovino and a valuable painting by the artist Pittoni;
- the Church of Navolè, in Romanesque style, features three naves, with two chapels, tow sacristies and three altars. Worth of note is a valuable triptych by Cima da Conegliano;
- Villa Foscarini Cornaro;
- Villa Brunesca;
- Villa Revedin;
- the Forest of the Cavalier
