Description

Municipality in the province of Rovigo, located along the bank of the Po, in a flat area, the territory of Ficarolo is located on the border with the regions of Lombardy and Emilia Romagna.
About the origins of the country there is a certain harmony in points of view: for some historians, it dates back to the period of the Roman colonization, while for others it was in the X century. In matters of fact, the first documented information, about the town, dates back to 936. In a document, dating back only a few decades later, reports of the existence of a castle, built to defend Ficarolo. In 1152, when the river Po burst its banks, a disastrous flood invaded Ficarolo and caused victims and damage throughout the valleys of Polesine. The ruler of the times, the Estensi, ordered the building of dams and sort of new branch to the river, which was named Po of Ficarolo. The strategic position occupied by the center, which controlled the transit of the river, allowed it to become of great importance. In the XV century , the centre submitted the siege of Venice and later was assigned and ruled for a long period by Ferrara, until it became part of the Papal States.

Attractions:
- the Church of St. Antonino Martire. Built in 970, documents of the time report the existence of this ancient church, which was originally dedicated to Santa Maria. Due to the redirection of the riverbed, the original building was rebuilt more than one time. The continuous movement and floods of the Po, forced the inhabitants to rebuild the main centre and the parish church away from the river waters. The present building was erected in the XVIII century, designed by Barbieri and only completed in 1914. It is a beautiful Baroque structure, whose façade is divided into two parts, bounded by half columns and enriched by niches and statues. A small gable completes the whole structure. The interior features a single monumental nave plan, enriched by four perimeter chapels and beautiful altars in polychrome marble and an XVIII century main altar. The building, flanked by a Bell Tower, contains a number of outstanding artworks by local artists, such as: the Ghedini, the Sarti and the Mucchiatti;
- the Oratory of St. Hippolytus and Corte Monesi, built in 1705, it preserves within a fine XVII century painting, depicting the Virgin between St. Anthony and St. Hippolytus and an XVIII century altar;
- the Church of Our Lady of the Carmine;
- Villa Schiatti, built in the XVII century, today seat of the Town Hall.
