The name, for some, derives from the Latin person's name "Curtius" (probably the name of the first land owner of the area), while for others, from "Hill of Janus". Municipality in the province of Perugia, is located on a hill, not far from the regional main center. The urban center features a typical medieval context of the houses, divided by a maze of narrow alleys and stairs, dominated by a watchtower. The old town is of extraordinary beauty, rich of watchtowers and surrounded by ancient walls.
According to the local legends, the center was founded by a traveling companion of Ulysses, Coragino. The area was inhabited since ancient times, as evidenced by the discovery of interesting finds from the Neolithic Ages. Other findings demonstrate the presence of a small settlement between the IX and the VIII century B.C., enlarged and scattered in the surroundings, between the III and I centuries B.C. The main center was built in medieval times and was surrounded by a strong fortified wall between the XIII and XIV centuries. In the XII century, Corciano was assigned to the Bishop of Perugia and this close relationship led to the clash with Todi. In the XV century, the town had to defend from the troops of Braccio da Montone. During the Renaissance, the center lived a particularly favorable period and was enriched with important works of art and buildings.
Attractions:
- the Parish Church of Santa Maria Assunta, built in the XIII century, in Gothic style, was renovated in the XIX century. Inside it preserves a masterpiece of the Perugino and one of the artist Bonfigli, respectively, of the XVI and XV centuries. The building is flanked by a Bell Tower decorated with arches and mullioned windows;
- the Church and the Convent of St. Augustine, built in 1334 and restored in the XVIII century. Inside is preserved an XVIII century wooden choir;
- the XVI century Church of St. Christopher, which houses the Museum of the Pievania;
- the Church and the former Convent of San Francesco;
- the XIII century Municipal Tower;
- Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo, built in the XV century, features a well dating from the late XV century;
- the XVI century Town Hall, which features a room with a ceiling embellished with frescoes;
- the rural Farmer's Museum (della Casa Contadina);
- the Antiquarium
