Description

Cerreto Guidi rises on a hillock placed in the lower valley of the Arno river, extending from the Montalbano area to the Arno river. The place name derives from the Guidi counts, landownres of the area, who built there a castle.
The town was built in the Middle Age and grew rapidly thanks to its proximity to the Via Francigena, area of intense trades.
Once conquered by the Medici family, Cerreto Guidi became place of hunting fot the florentine court: infact, Cosimo I built here a Renaissance villa, now seat of the Historic Museum of Hunting and Territory.
The Pieve di San Leonardo, set near the Medici villa, is already mentioned in the X century and preserves important works of art, such as two "Scred Conversations" (the first one by Franciabigio and the second one by the school of Ghirlandaio), the baptismal font by Giovanni della Robbia and a wooden crucifix by Giambologna.
The Sanctuary of Santa Liberata was realised in the XIV century, starting from a fresco of the saint, whose cult increased in the years. The stucture was expanded in the following centuries and became a sanctuary in 1966.
