Description

Main centre of the homonym valley, in the province of Trento, Cembra is one of the most important wine producer areas of the entire region, located on a large and sunny natural terrace, along which stretch regular rows of fine vines, that go down to the valley of 'Avisio, from whose grapes some of the most famous Trentino wines are produced, such as: Pinot Noir, Schiava and Muller Thurgau.
While jealously preserving its typical rural village imprint, Cembra is characterized by palaces and churches rich in works of art.
In the nearby is located the Lake Santo, a clear water lake, immortalized in some famous late XV century watercolors of the painter Albrecht Dürer, realized during one of his visits to the area, on his way to Venice.
The discovery of a "situla" (an Etruscan wine jar) that evidences that the area was characterized by settlements since ancient times and has become the symbol of the wine-making traditions.
Sites of Interest:
- the Church of St. Peter, located in the historical center of Cembra has medieval origins and houses a fresco cycle depicting the life of Christ (XVI century), and a beautiful depiction of the Last Judgement (XVIII century), masterpiece of the artist Valentino Rovisi, who belonged to the art school of Tiepolo. Near the chancel it is still possible to admire the remains of a memorial cell;
- the church of Santa Maria Assunta, which according to the local traditions, was already a place of worship in the X century and was rebuilt in Gothic style between the XV and XVI centuries. It was heavily remodeled in 1858. It features five naves and is embellished with XVII century Gothic paintings of Teofilo Polacco;
- the Church of San Rocco, with it wooden carved and gilded Baroque altar;
- the Palazzo Barbi is today seat of the local tourist office. Its interior is decorated with the coats of arms of the eleven municipalities of the valley.
