Description

The town's name seems to have quite clear origins and derives from the union of two words "field" and "sea", which indicate the particular location occupied by the centre along the coastline. Another school of thought, however, proposes that the second part of the name derives from the Latin person's name "Marinus". Municipality in the province of Campobasso, situated near the Adriatic coast, at just 5 kilometers from the border with the Apulia region, it is famous for its district Campomarino Lido, which is a fully equipped seaside resort, with a modern marina and is a departure point to reach the Tremiti Islands. It is one of four towns in Molise were the Albanian language and culture are still part of the local customs.
The recent discovery of the remains of a settlement evidence that the area was inhabited since ancient times. The town of Campomarino was an important center in the Lombard period, under the Angevin it was proclaimed feud of the d'Alneto, then it was assigned to the Monforte. In the second half of the XV century, following a disastrous earthquake, the area depopulated, until it was chosen by refugees fleeing from Albania to avoid the raids of the Turks. The territories submitted the dominion of several other feudal lords, including the Di Sangro, until the final abolition of the feudal system.
